Castellu di Baricci, Corsica
An idyllic hideaway for nature and wine lovers
By Cyriacus W. Schultze
ADVERTORIAL
Full of charm and authenticity, this traditional manor house in southern Corsica promises a fabulous stay for large families or groups of friends. Located in a secluded valley surrounded by vineyards, the rental villa is framed by majestic boulders and a fragrant green carpet of trees, shrubs and wild plants, the maquis. A painter could not have imagined this spacious scenery, reminiscent of South Africa in places, any better.
LE CHAI, the spacious main building, stands in the centre of a secluded country estate where wine and olive oil are produced. It features a large living area with an open fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen and two furnished terraces with barbecue facilities. Each of the 4 bedrooms has its own bathroom. Below the house is an idyllic shaded stone garden from which a path leads to the nearby pool, surrounded by vineyards and cypress trees.
Alternatively to the large and rustic main house, there are other modern and charmingly furnished maisonette apartments for rental – an ideal fit for 2 or 4 people.
In addition to the countless spots for rest and tranquillity, where you can unwind, read or sunbathe, there are numerous options for outdoor activities: Either you can go on various hikes on the surrounding mountains with breathtaking views, or make excursions by bike or by car to the nearby beaches, with Roccapina being the closest at a short 15 minutes drive. Definitely recommended is a visit to the nearby Ortolo, a torrent in unspoiled serenity that meanders through the entire valley and, of course, a visit to the property’s own wine cellar, ending with a small tasting of regional delicacies.
The expressive wines of Castellu di Baricci – under the direction of charming owner Elisabeth Quilichini – are produced in organic quality from the regional grape varieties Minustellu, Grenache, Genovese, Nielucciu, Vermentinu and Sciacarellu. “The vineyards are classified as protected designation of origin (AOP Corse Sartène) and are farmed purely organically. We respect traditions, ancestral grape varieties and terroir,” Elisabeth explains to us during a wine tasting. „And we have tried to create an idyllic spot for wine lovers. The Ortolo Valley is a great terroir and the mountains provide a pleasantly cool climate during the hot Corsican summer nights.”
Currently, she is looking for an importer and distributor in Germany or Austria who would like to include the wines of Castellu di Baricci exclusively in his program. Interested wine merchants are welcome to contact us at CLATU Consulting in Heidelberg: verena@clatu.com.
The olives of the farm are also grown organically, harvested with nets, carefully selected and then ground mechanically in an old oil press. They are used to produce organic extra virgin olive oil, a shiny and noble condiment from Ghjermana and Zinzala varieties with delicious notes of cooked artichokes, gras and hazelnuts. Do go!
