Waldhaus Sils-Maria
An enchanted relic from a bygone era

ADVERTORIAL

Nestled at the peak of the Engadine region, the welcoming Waldhaus Sils overlooks the scenic valley etched across eastern Switzerland, reminiscent of a scar along the Alps. Although St Moritz is a mere ten-minute drive, the village of Sils-Maria boasts its own unique character and rich history. This locale has long stirred the creativity of poets, artists, and philosophers. Both Nietzsche and Hermann Hesse resided and spent time here, and generations of creatives have drawn inspiration from its surroundings.
This iconic architectural gem, bearing a five-star status, consists of 140 rooms, 220 beds, and employs a staff of 180. It epitomizes the concept of a family-run Grand Hotel. Strolling through the Waldhaus feels like navigating a living museum of 20th-century design; it is akin to a home, warmly lived-in, rather than a curated exhibition for outsiders. This place resembles a close-knit community of residents rather than affluent hotel guests. Admittedly, younger patrons or less seasoned travelers might find the historic interiors and occasionally nostalgic decor peculiar if not outdated. Far from embodying modern sleekness or hipness for the Jet Set, it stands apart from luxury hotel chains like Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Aman, or One&Only.
To sum it up: The Waldhaus is not just another luxury hotel; it possesses a distinct soul. It could be best described as a representation of European culture, characterized by modesty, charm, cultural affinity, and a hint of luxury without extravagance. It is affordable, close to St. Moritz and Pontresina, yet removed from the hustle and glamour. Traveling from Samedan/Celerina towards the mountain passes of Maloja or Julier, and passing by the picturesque St. Moritz Lake near the Palace, the Carlton, Kulm, Grand Hotel Des Bains, and Suvretta, one might not expect another illustrious location. However, just beyond Silvaplana, the Waldhaus rises majestically above the quaint village of Sils-Maria, resembling a lone structure amidst the forest. Its impressive facade brings to mind cinematic settings like the Overlook Hotel from Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” or the Grand Budapest Hotel from Wes Anderson’s film.

A Family Afffair since 1908
Managed by the same family since its foundation in 1908, it now thrives under the care of Claudio and Patrick Dietrich, who excel in their stewardship. Despite its cultured allure and nostalgic architecture featuring expansive halls, lounges, a classic bar, and a cigar lounge, the Waldhaus provides every modern convenience: in addition to tennis courts, bustling cross-country ski trails, and picturesque hiking routes. Ski enthusiasts enjoy direct access to the Furschellas ski area, with links to Corvatsch and nearby Corviglia slopes. A total of 350 km of meticulously maintained slopes await. After a vigorous day outdoors, the expansive 1,500 m² spa promises unparalleled relaxation. Additionally, there is a fitness center and a yoga program available.
Food connoisseurs will find themselves delighted: they have the option of savoring traditional dishes made with premium local ingredients in the Arvenstube, enjoying an elegant candlelit meal in the spacious dining area, indulging in a fondue night at the contemporary and minimalist Gigers, or experiencing the Chef’s Table – a unique opportunity to dine behind the scenes in the hotel kitchen, accommodating up to 12 guests. Expect to relish expertly crafted Swiss mountain cuisine, complemented by an impressive wine selection that practically beckons you to explore the wines from the Bündner Herrschaft, a charming wine-producing area in the sunlit Rhine valley of eastern Switzerland. Many of the Waldhaus guests choose the hotel for dinner in the evenings. The dining halls, with their lofty ceilings and expansive windows facing the forest, create a setting that feels like dining in a cozy nest.

How to get there:
You can choose among several connections by train or bus to St. Moritz. A driver will be happy to meet you at the train station, free of charge. The SBB, Switzerland’s national railroad, also offers you a convenient luggage transfer from door to door.
Travelling by car, Sils Maria is 10km southwest of St. Moritz in the canton of Graubünden. You have a choice of routes if you are traveling by car, e.g. via Zurich and Chur coming from the north, via Como, arriving from Italy. For the best route, see Google Maps. If you are coming from northern Switzerland and you want to avoid the passes in winter, the RhB railroad takes you and your car through the Vereina Tunnel.
